1. a和 the : 單數,單複數

2. abandon, desert, quit: 拋離,擅離,停止
Abandon: It is against the law to abandon pats on the street.
Quit: You should quit smoking for the sake of better health.
Desert: A small group of soldiers deserted their posts when the enemy attacked.

Abandon: As the flood waters rose, the people were forced to abandon their house.
3. able, capable: 後天和先天
Able: Is your son able to recite the alphabet yet?
Capable: Do you think he is capable of being in charge?

4. aboard, capable: 登船到國外

Abroad: Many people go abroad in the summer.
Aboard: Tim is already aboard the plane.
5. above, on, over: 漂浮,碰觸,越過
Over: A plane flew over the house.
Above: The moon is now above the trees.

On: He laid a hand on my shoulder.
6. accept, receive: 接受和收到

Receive: I've just received a telegram.
Accept: He has accepted our invitation.
7. accident, event: 壞事和大事
He died in an automobile accident years ago.
Winning the scholarship was a great event in the boy's life.

8. happening, incident: 怪事和爛事
Happening: There have been strange happenings here lately.
Incident : an event, especially one that is unusual, important, or violent
  A spokesman said it was an isolated incident .
  Am I at risk because of some incident in my sexual past?

NOTE ON USAGE 用法: Compare happen, occur and take place. 试比较happen、occur、take place这三个词语. Happen and occur refer to accidental or unplanned events; occur is more formal than happen *happen和occur指偶然发生的或未经筹画的事件;occur 比happen文雅些: The accident happened/occurred at about 9.30. 事故发生在9点30分左右. Happen can also indicate one event resulting from another *happen亦可指某件事是由另一事引起的: What happened when you told him the news? (ie What did he do?) 你告诉他这消息时, 他有何反应? Take place suggests that an event is/was planned *take place指的事情是有计画的: The funeral took place on 24 April at 3 pm. 葬礼已于4月24月下午3时举行.
