TSMC opts for electric vehicles to shuttle staff around its facilities at Hsinchu Science Park (2014/09/19)

In an effort to reduce carbon emissions, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has been promoting the use of electric-powered vehicles. TSMC has given up on diesel powered shuttle buses and switched to more environmentally friendly, electric-powered vehicles to transport its employees around its factory grounds at Hsinchu Science Park.

Passengers on this shuttle bus will notice two things that make for an especially pleasant ride. There is no loud engine noise, nor is there any exhaust smoke. The vehicle, which is used by TSMC as transport for its employees at the Hsinchu Science Park, runs solely on electric power.

In a bid to reduce carbon emissions, TSMC contracted RAC Electric Vehicles to build more environmentally friendly transport for its employees, which was funded with a two-year grant from the Ministry of Economics. TSMC previously used nine diesel-power vehicles at its factory grounds, but now uses these electrically powered shuttle buses exclusively. With a passenger volume of 3,500 persons per day, the buses are helping the company to significantly reduce carbon emissions.

The vehicle reduces carbon emissions by 200 metric tons. That’s the equivalent of 20,000 thousand trees, or twice the size of Da-an Park in Taipei.

TSMC says it only costs just NT$2 dollars per kilometer to run its electric vehicle. By comparison, a vehicle running on diesel fuel costs 5.5 NT dollars per kilometer, making the new shuttle buses more cost-efficient.

The vehicle can be charged at night, during off-peak hours for electricity use. One charge will lasts about an entire day.

The buses are also equipped with onboard computers that are collecting data for the development of future electric powered vehicles.

電動交通車

為了響應節能減碳的環保概念,台積電竹科廠捨棄過去十幾年來的柴油接駁車,全數換成電動交通車,不但安靜又不會排放廢氣,也可節省相關交通成本。

仔細聽聽,這輛公車既沒有吵雜的引擎聲,也沒有惱人的廢氣。原來這是台積電和國內廠商合作,推出行駛於台積電竹科廠區的電動交通車。

為了響應節能減碳的觀念,台積電向經濟部申請兩年專案補助,和華德動能合作,捨棄過去的9輛柴油接駁車,全改成更環保的電動車,以廠內每天3500人次的運輸量來看,能減少可觀的碳排放量。

此外,電動接駁車行駛1公里用電只需2塊錢,比柴油的5.5元便宜許多,大幅降低操作成本。

夜間利用離峰電的時間來充電,充一次電大概可以跑一整天。

台積電廠內電動接駁車實際操作的同時,合作廠商也會用電腦收集各項數據,作為日後推廣電動車的參考。
