Prosecutors seize assets of Changhua edible oil manufacturer (2013/10/21)
Changhua prosecutors have seized assets of the company at the center of the edible oil scandal. They also re-visited the Chang Chi Foodstuff Factory today to collect samples of oils labeled as pure but thought to be adulterated with cheap cottonseed oil.
The accusations against Chang Chi Foodstuff Factory and its chairman, Kao Chen-li, could lead to stiff fines and compensation claims. To prevent shedding of assets, today the Changhua Prosecutors Office seized assets held by the company, along with 12 bank accounts, 20 plots of land, and six homes owned by Kao.
Health investigators also went to the Chang Chi plant. They were there to collect more oil samples and check whether health products had illegal additives. One item they are looking for is cottonseed oil.
Yeh Yen-po Director-General, Changhua Health Bureau Chang Chi has not admitted to added cottonseed oil to its products. So we need to collect samples. If we detect any gossypol, we will have evidence to prove this.
Earlier, when customers tried to return Chang Chi products, they were rejected. The Changhua County government has decided to help them file for joint compensation.
According to new regulations under the Act Governing Food Sanitation, if consumers cannot prove harm, the court can still be award NT$500 to NT$20,000 in compensation per person.
