用between時，指的是一件件彼此分離的單獨事物，著重其「異」；

用among時，指的是多件事物組成的混合集體，著重其「同」。

among與between的區別——真的要懂，不能再支支吾吾地應付過去了

時間不充裕者——可直接跳至最後所解；

還是建議：一行行地看到最後——達到逐漸理解從而掌握的程度。

between通常用以表示兩者之間；但雖有三者以上，而涉及每兩者之間之相互關係時仍用between：

a treaty between three powers（三強之間的條約）

The three children saved $100 between them. （那三個孩子共存了100美元。）

between通常用於兩者之間，三者以上用among。

意識到相互關係或明確闡述地理位置時，即便是三者以上，也用between：

a treaty between the three nations三國間的條約

Switzerland lies between France, Germany, Austria and Italy.

瑞士位於法國、德國、奧地利和義大利之間。

許多現代英語學者已經不用這種方法（among用於三者或三者以上「之間」，而between卻只用於二者「之間」）來解釋among與between的用法了。

例如

A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language的作者們（R. Quirk等人）說：

「between用於某一物體的位置與一組特定的可分離事物之間的關係，而among用於表示某一物體的位置與非分離事物之間的關係」。

Collins Dictionary of English Usage的編者說：

「between可以用來表示三個以上的事物之間的關係，但這裡通常具有分離的關係，而among可以指數目不確定的事物」。

He shared his property between his wife, his daughter and his sister.

他把財產分給了他的妻子、女兒和妹妹。

I divide my time between teaching, writing and lecturing.

我的時間分別用於數學、寫作和作報告。

Our house is between the wood, the river and the village.

我們的房子位於森林、河流和村莊之間。

A triangle is the space between three points. 三角形是三個點之間的空間。

We quarrel among ourselves. 我們大家互相爭吵。

She prefers to live among the working people. 她寧願生活在勞動人民中間。

有一種說法，認為between後面管兩個，among後面管兩個以上，這種說法基本上是對的，但不夠準確。

如果只涉及兩件事物，當然只能用between。

但是涉及三件或三件以上的事物時，不是一定不能用between而只能用among。

總的原則是：

用between時，指的是一件件彼此分離的單獨事物，著重其「異」；

用among時，指的是多件事物組成的混合集體，著重其「同」。

1） 後面事物如果數目清楚明確（也就有獨立存在的意義）時使用between。例如：

a treaty between four nations一部四國條約

Luxembourg lies Belgium, Germany and France. 盧森堡位於比利時、德國和法國之間。

He was happy to be among friends again. 他很高興又回到朋友們當中來了。

There was a village among the hills. 群山當中有一個村莊。

2） 用between時，即使是三件或三件以上的事物，彼此界限還是分明的，並不混成一體，用among則表示已經糾纏在一起。例如：

They fought among (不用between) themselves. 他們彼此打起架來。

（自己內部打架，不是打別人）此時即使數目明確，也用among。

divide the candy among (不用between) four children

把糖果分給四個孩子（四個孩子是分配的範圍）。

3） 同理，後面如果是集合名詞，更說明了是混成一體，因此只能用among，不能用between。例如：

We saw him among (不用between) the crowd. 我們看見他在人群中。

She stood among (不用between) the audience. 她在聽眾當中站立著。

My brother was traveling among a group of tourists. 我哥哥正在同一批遊客中旅遊。

4） 由於between傾向於獨立性而among傾向於集體性，下面例句就因between和among而在意義上有細微的差別：

The bomb landed between (among) the houses.

用between時，炸彈落在房子當中的空地上（房子是互相分開的），沒有能毀房傷人。

用among時，多棟房子合成一個「小區」，炸彈落到了小區里，可能毀房傷人。

A series of wars between (among) the Greek cities中，如果用between，這些希臘城邦是各自獨立的身份作戰；如果用了among，則給人以「混戰」的印象，今天聯甲攻乙，明天聯乙攻甲，類似中國的春秋戰國。

5） 同一類的事物，由於不強調彼此的差別，只能用among，不能用between。例如：

She is among the best of our singers. 她是我們最好的歌手之一。

There must be a spy among them. 他們當中一定有一個間諜。

6） 同理，由於between傾向於獨立性，當列舉多件不同事物作為某一範圍的外部標誌時，也要用between而不能用among。例如：

Luxembourg lies Belgium, Germany and France. 盧森堡位於比利時、德國和法國之間（比、得、法三國並沒有在此合成一體，如果後面事物數目含糊而且合成一個集體，就用among）。

They searched the area between（不用among）the river, the farmhouse, and the woods.

他們搜索了河、農戶房屋和樹林之間的地帶。

He shared his property between（不用among）his wife, daughter, and his sister.

他把財產拿來在妻子、女兒和妹妹之間分配。

但是如果不是幾個單數可數名詞的並列，而是籠統的複數名詞，則可以用among。

He shared his property among his loved ones.

他把財產拿來在親人之間分配（外人沒有份）。

7） among傾向於表示「合在一起」，between則偏重彼此界限，因此，凡是涉及「區別」、「差異」、「分歧」，就用between，不用among。例如：

the difference between (不用among) them 他們彼此的差異

8）表示「保密」、「你知我知」、「不外傳」，即使是多人，也不用among而用between。

If these ideas were spoken publicly they would be unpopular. But between us here, I conceive them to be wholly realistic. 這些想法，如果公開說出來，會不得人心的。但是，在咱們這裡內部，我覺得這些想法是完全實事求是的。

9）多個個體兩者之間的關係，由於是單純的雙邊關係，用between。

the cracks between the boards of the ceiling天花板上板與板之間的縫隙

The truck driver had obviously been drinking between stops.

卡車司機顯然在站於站之間喝了酒。

總結上面的9條：

among：數目不定、合在/糾纏在一起、集合名詞、集體性；

between：數目明確、界限分明，強調保密、差異/區別/分歧。

根本原因：

用between時，指的是一件件彼此分離的單獨事物，著重其「異」；

用among時，指的是多件事物組成的混合集體，著重其「同」。
