Swiss representative discusses skiing in Switzerland (2015/03/30)
In recent years more Taiwanese have taken up skiing. While many head to the slopes of Hokkaido, Japan, there is also a wide range of resorts to choose from in Europe. FTV’s Jinny Chang spoke with the Swiss representative to Taipei, Rolf Frei, to learn more about the popular resorts and tourist amenities his country offers.
The southwestern town of Zermatt, located near Switzerland’s border with Italy, is at the foothills of the Matterhorn, one of the most iconic mountains in the Alps. Home to the highest elevation ski resorts in Europe, Zermatt has a maximum lift elevation of 3,883 meters. Skiing from here is like starting a run at the top of Yushan. No wonder the region is known for its long ski runs.

We have in Switzerland around 30 ski resorts, which are on high altitudes, over 2,800 meters. That means you’re sure to have snow.

Minister criticizes plan to bring aboriginals to ancestor worship ceremony in China (2015/03/27)
Council of Indigenous Peoples minister Lin Chiang-yi has called it “ridiculous” to label Taiwanese aboriginals as descendants of China’s Yellow Emperor. Lin’s comments were in response to a New Party plan to take young aboriginals to an ancestral worship ceremony in China.
Worshippers pay tribute to the Yellow Emperor outside of his tomb in Shaanxi. This is an important ceremony that takes place each year on Tomb Sweeping Day in China. Among those who will attend this year is New Party member Yu Mu-ming. His plan to bring along aboriginal youth representatives has sparked criticism.

It would be ridiculous to label (aboriginals) as descendants of the Yan and Yellow emperors. I think a lot of people would oppose participating in this ancestral worship ceremony.

President under fire after saying he’s not aware of widespread feelings of malaise (2015/03/20)
Taiwanese workers stuck at the same real salaries as 16 years ago often express feelings of stagnation and no way forward. But President Ma Ying-jeou denied that such sentiments are common. Critics are now calling him out of touch.
President Ma attended a Fulbright Conference on Thursday, where a foreign student asked why some citizens felt stagnation or no way forward and how he hoped to change this.
Ma’s reply was “who feels this? Tell me and I will talk with them.” Labor groups jumped on this comment as a means of criticizing the administration.
