Changhua pharmacist manages a trip around the world on a shoestring budget (2014/09/15)
Many of us would love to travel around the world, but we often give up such a dream because of the cost. But a pharmacist from Changhua managed to overcome this obstacle, spending just NT$800,000 to travel to 26 countries in one year.
From Mount Kilimanjaro in the African country of Tanzania to an active volcano in Ethiopia and a desert scene filled with cactus trees -- Chen Wei-ting has been to all of these remote places, as part of a year-long trip to 26 countries. The pharmacist accomplished his dream trip on a budget of just NT$850,000.
Chen Wei-ting Traveler I found a cheap plane ticket and started planning from there. I tried my best to go in just one direction and not backtrack on my route. Since I was traveling alone, I used couch-surfing websites to find accommodation or else I stayed in local hostels. That was my goal.
Chen’s trip compares favorably to a tour from a travel agency. A typical package that takes one traveler to 14 countries in 60 days costs NT$1.2 million. Chen’s budget of 850,000 has impressed at least one person in the travel industry.
Yu Kuo-chen Travel Agency It’s quite difficult to do what he did. To spend just over NT$800,000 for a trip around the world, you have to be quite frugal. When you’re abroad, there are many costs that affect your budget, especially taking into account food, lodging and transport. Yu thinks travelers should take note. If you’re on a shoestring budget for a trip like Chen’s, expect to compromise quality when it comes to food and lodging. Also required: a spirit that can endure hardship.
