Elderly man shows courage in helping save passengers from TransAsia plane (2015/02/05)
Another
act of bravery came after the TransAsia Airways plane had crashed into
the river. An elderly man helped passengers sitting near him unbuckle
their seat belts and pulled them from the aircraft before they drowned.
Premier Mao Chi-kuo was at the Tri-Service General Hospital Songshan branch to check on 72-year-old survivor Huang Chin-shun.

aircraft was swaying from side to side and I knew something was up. The
person next to me was unbuckling his seat belt and calling to me. Once
he unbuckled his belt and stopped talking, the plane went down.
Seeing
rescuers approach the plane, Huang escaped and boarded a raft. In the
moments after the aircraft careened into the river, Huang not only undid
his own seat belt quickly but helped others to safety by unbuckling
their seat belts as well.

others inside were about to drown, so I undid their seat belts and
pulled them out from their seats. I pulled out one, then another. I
pulled out two or three. I was once on a rescue team when I was 15 years
old.
A native of Guangdong province, Huang said he had
previously been involved in a boat accident when he came with his family
to Taiwan. He got lucky again Wednesday when he survived the air crash.

lot of my friends knew about the Penghu accident and warned me
absolutely not to take the plane. But I said it didn’t matter because
life and death is a matter of fate.
Huang amazingly survived the
crash with only a bruised mouth and minor injuries to his arms and legs.
His courage has made him one of the unsung heroes in an otherwise
tragic story.
