Wugu-Yangmei elevated expressway shows damage from heavy rains (2013/08/23)

After just over four months of service, three large cracks have emerged on the Wugu-Yangmei elevated expressway. The National Freeway Bureau says heavy rain during Tropical Storm Trami is at fault, but a civil engineer cast the blame squarely on poor design.

On the northward section of the Wugu-Yangmei expressway, between Nankan and Linkou near the 45.1-kilometer section, three major cracks suddenly emerged in the roadway. One crack was 30 meters in length and nearly 4 centimeters at its widest point.

The National Freeway Bureau explained that Tropical Storm Trami brought 300 millimeters of rainfall over three days, which led to these cracks. It said the roadway could not withstand the additional pressure. Precipitation

Heavy rainfall led groundwater levels to rise, creating upward pressure on the road surface, leading to these cracks in the road.

A prominent civil engineer has a different view. He believes the expressway base has inadequate drainage, causing an important retaining wall to soak in water and eventually tilt outwards, leading the road to sag. Protrude ; convex surface / indent ; concave surface

If this retaining wall soaks in water, the whole foundation soaks, so it will naturally tilt (outwards). And if this retaining wall tilts, this whole road will move to that side, leading to these cracks. If it continues to be soaked in water, the tilt could become more serious. The worst that could happen is the whole road could collapse.

Freeway bureau officials reassured motorists that no such immediate dangers exist. They have already dispatched workers to seal the damaged area with a 40-centimeter layer of asphalt.

五楊高路裂

通車才4個多月的五楊高架，昨天驚傳出現三處裂縫。國工局解釋，應該是潭美颱風，帶來暴雨，地下水無法宣洩，路面才會隆起，不過，土木專家並不認同，認為可能是擋土牆惹的禍。

五楊高架北上南崁到林口約45.1公里處，一次就出現三個裂縫，其中一條30公尺長的裂縫，最寬的地方，將近4公分。

高工局解釋，因為潭美颱風，3天帶來300毫米雨量，路面支撐不住，才會膨脹裂開。

“大量的降雨，造成地下水位上升，水壓上升以後把我們的路面往上擠，從現場發現路面突起造成龜裂。”

土木專家則有不同看法，研判因為五楊高，地基排水不良，導致擋土牆，長期泡水傾斜，路面才會發生凹陷。

擋土牆等於泡在水裡，基礎放在水裡，當然就會傾斜，這塊擋土牆如果傾斜了，這塊主體整個往那邊移動，那裡就自然裂開了。繼續泡水，很可能擋土牆會傾斜越來越嚴重，甚至整個路體就倒下來，就整個垮掉了

面對質疑聲浪，官員掛保證，目前國道沒有立即危險，目前已暫時派員，在出包路段，補上一層40公分高的柏油。
