Sweet rice dumplings selling fast ahead of winter solstice (2013/12/20)
A favorite dish to beat the winter chill is sweet rice dumplings with red beans and peanuts. With winter solstice arriving on Sunday, business has been brisk for a shop offering this treat near Taipei’s Lungshan Temple.
Early in the morning, the boss turns up the gas on this pot of sweet dumplings, allowing them to reach a rolling boil. After a short time in hot water, they are transferred to a pot of lukewarm water to give them a chewy consistency.
The dumplings are traditionally served in a sweet red bean or peanut soup.

Another popular item is toasted mochi, a type of glutinous rice snack.
Its chewiness is apparent when pressed. It’s typically topped with peanut powder and other flavoring.
Delivery service is busy. Nearly 100 bowls are set out, and extra help has been brought in to make the deadline.

This business has been operating for 75 years and has shown itself to be a favorite of consumers.
