Volunteer technicians pitch in to repair Legislature as students prepare to leave (2014/04/09)
Volunteer technicians and others have begun repairing damaged equipment in the Legislature. Speaker Wang Jin-pyng says several benefactors have offered to cover all costs and no public funds will be used.
Carefully checking the second floor of the Legislature, a volunteer technician identifies items that need to be repaired and sets to work immediately. Another technician carries a 3D scanner to make an accurate recording of the space.
3D Laser Scanner Technician It makes a simultaneous recording of the X, Y and Z coordinates. Later, measurements can be seen on the computer, so we can see current conditions of the Legislature when they leave.
Estimates of damage reach up to NT$100 million. However, students have said there is a list of just 45 items that need to be repaired, and the total cost is nowhere near the previously mentioned amount. One item that is still unaccounted for is the speaker’s gavel.
Student Representative There was a rumor that we found the gavel, but this turned out to be untrue, so we are still looking. We don’t have an estimate for (total repairs), but our understanding is that it won’t be as high as NT$100 million.
As for who will foot the bill for repairing the Legislature, Speaker Wang Jin-pyng says several individuals have stepped forward and offered contributions. According to Wang, no public funds will be used.
