Starting from next month Taiwanese citizens will be able to travel to the United States without a visa. Ahead of the launch, the American Institute in Taiwan hit the streets to promote the new program.
A crowd gathers in front of this department store, not for a year-end sale, but to learn more about going to America visa-free. They are visiting a booth set up by the American Institute in Taiwan.
Questions are immediately answered by workers who speak Chinese and English. The de facto embassy also has personnel hand out marketing materials.
There is a computer at the stand so people can apply for their visa on-site. Some brought their credit cards and passports then got in line.
Mr. Yuan It’s convenient, says this man. It should have been this way in the past. Before I didn’t want to wait in line for a visa, so I haven’t gone in many years.
Mark Zimmer AIT Spokesman Our visa officials felt we could use these booths to introduce this system, says AIT spokesman Mark Zimmer. We welcome Taiwanese to come to the United States for travel.
People who experienced the long, difficult process of applying for a U.S. visa were moved by the AIT’s new proactive approach. The booths were open for two days and may return in the future.
