Foreign Ministry wasn’t notified of visit by high-ranking North Korean official (2012/10/17)
North Korea’s Deputy Tourism Minister, Jo Sung-gyu, arrived on Sunday to discuss chartered flights and other travel excursions to North Korea. But Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry only learned about his visit by watching TV, sparking a major controversy. Foreign Minister David Lin responded.
David Lin Foreign Minister Our Singapore (embassy) knew, and of course we all knew that he is responsible for tourism. And this is not the first time he came. He got his visa in Singapore, and they didn’t report back to us in time.
The minister refused to directly answer questions. While Taiwan and North Korea have no official contact, North Korean officials can visit Taiwan on tourist visas. This began as early as 1990 when Taiwan had both tours and chartered flights to North Korea.
KMT Legislator Lin Yu-fang said Jo Sung-gyu’s visit to Taiwan to promote tourism could be beneficial. Lin wants to see more travel between the two countries.
Lin Yu-fang KMT Legislator Mainland Chinese can travel to and from North Korea, why can’t we? And this was an important official. The deputy tourism minister. It’s not bad if his visit means more Taiwanese tourists can visit North Korea. And if North Korean tourists are willing to come here, we should welcome them.
North Korea has a new leader. Jo’s visit signals the potential for closer ties with Taiwan.
