What does the phrase "by default" mean?
What does the phrase "by default" mean? Does it relate to the meaning of default on a computer?
I know what default means as related to settings on a computer, but what other ways can this word be used? Thanks.

It means the same thing as it does with computers: if no other action is taken, the default action will occur or the default condition will, or will continue to, exist. If you are not male, by default you are female (the only other possible condition). If mom asks what you want for dinner and you do not take the action of telling her, by default you will have whatever she cooks. If you want to go to the movies with either Bill or John and Bill can't go, by default you will go with John. If the grass is dry and you do not water it, it will remain dry. A team cannot win a game it is obligated to play if it does not play the game, so it loses by default: by lack of the action of playing.

「Guts」日來風波不息，首先，英文之「guts」是「gut」的複數型，翻譯中文絕對只是勇氣，而腸子的英文是「gut」單數形，所以「guts」不能翻成腸子，就如同「good」與「goods」兩者中文意義完全不同一般。
行政院副院長邱義仁以「Guts」（有膽識）稱贊他的院長長官張俊雄「撐住油價機制」的這個字，被馬英九拿 來嘲諷張俊雄，說他對油價政策立場反覆，好像他的「膽」被「手術移除」一般。未料張院長於電視鏡頭前語態扭捏地說不清講什麼後，才勉強洴出：「這是我的 Privacy(隱私)，希望容許我來保留。」院長講話的口齒，給人的感覺好像從來沒有這般虛偽過。也難怪，貴為全國最高行政長官，好的政積一項也沒，卻 是對物價漲、油價漲、治安壞，袖手無策，更痛苦的還有僚屬閣員們上吐（杜）下洩（謝）不斷，「五元」「小車」凸槌不停。不然，一個人割除膽又有什麼見不得 人嗎？何必如此像小媳婦一般，哪像堂堂行政院長之尊呢？
再說，世界上割除膽器官的大有人在，這些人還不是活得健健康康，快快樂樂的。更何況，張院長雖然以無膽之士還能位居高堂之上，那何需要對割除膽一事上鏡 頭，博社會同情？還是要更高職位？一大把年紀的老人還在鏡頭前如此膽怯怯，這麼難以啟齒，真是丟人現臉，有何意義？
